"Amidst the grass, a shepherd boy plays a piccolo, while delicate willows sway gently in the breeze. Who could have imagined that this vivid scene—featuring a lively shepherd and elegant willow—was carved entirely from ox horns? On the 19th, at Harbin Special Arts and Crafts Factory located on Dacheng Street, Nangang District, the reporter met Li Jianxin, the current master of the corner carving technique.
Known as 'Ice City Original Horn Carving,' this unique art form uses ox horns as its primary material. Developed in 1964 by pioneers such as Liu Baoshu, Liu Bin, and Yang Shichaa at the factory, it has become a symbol of traditional craftsmanship in Heilongjiang province.
Li Jianxin recalls that in 1972, when he was just in his early twenties, he joined the factory and began learning horn carving under experienced artisans. Over the past 40 years, he has risen to become the director of the factory and the third-generation inheritor of this art.
As the only factory in the country dedicated to producing corner carving crafts, the Harbin Special Arts and Crafts Factory continues to uphold this time-honored tradition. The raw materials—yellow ox horns—come in a variety of colors, including deep red, yellow, dark green, black, gray, and white, offering a calm and elegant aesthetic.
The process of creating a corner carving is intricate, involving more than twenty steps, from flattening and scraping to sawing, grinding, engraving, and final assembly. Each piece requires the collaboration of multiple skilled workers.
In the 1970s, corner carving craft paintings gained international recognition. At the height of its popularity, the factory produced over 1,500 pieces monthly, with 80% exported to Southeast Asia and Canada. Orders poured in from all over the world.
Under Li Jianxin’s leadership, the art has evolved, blending traditional techniques with modern cultural concepts. The craft has won numerous awards at both provincial and national levels. In 2009, the unique horn carving art of Harbin was officially listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage, ensuring its survival for future generations."
