In the heart of Harbin, where the cold winter winds meet the warmth of tradition, a unique art form has been quietly thriving for over half a century. “On the grass, the shepherd boy plays a piccolo, and the delicate willow sways in the wind.†This poetic scene is not painted on canvas but carved from ox horns, an intricate craft known as *corner carving*. On the 19th, at the Harbin Special Arts and Crafts Factory, located at No. 9 Dacheng Street in Nangang District, reporter met Li Jianxin, the current successor of this rare and precious art.
The horn carving technique, born in 1964, was pioneered by artists such as Liu Baoshu, Liu Bin, and Yang Shichaa, all affiliated with the Harbin Special Arts and Crafts Factory. It is considered one of the original forms of artistic relief painting in Harbin, filling a significant gap in the province’s traditional crafts. For Li Jianxin, who joined the factory in his early twenties in 1972, it was more than just a job—it became a lifelong passion.
Today, as the director of the factory and the third-generation inheritor of the craft, Li has witnessed the evolution of horn carving from a local art to a recognized cultural treasure. The process itself is complex and meticulous. Using yellow ox horns—available in a range of colors like dark red, yellow, dark green, black, gray, and white—artisans transform these natural materials into intricate paintings. Each piece goes through more than twenty steps, including flattening, scraping, sawing, grinding, engraving, and installation. Due to its complexity, the production requires multiple skilled workers working in harmony.
To this day, the Harbin Special Arts and Crafts Factory remains the only factory in China dedicated to producing corner carving artworks. Its uniqueness and craftsmanship have earned it a place in the Heilongjiang Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009.
In the 1970s, horn carving gained international recognition. At its peak, the factory produced over 1,500 pieces per month, with 80% exported to Southeast Asia and Canada. Orders poured in from all over the world. Over the years, Li Jianxin and his team have continuously innovated, blending traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. As a result, corner carving has not only preserved its roots but also found new relevance in contemporary art.
This ancient craft, once hidden in the shadows of history, now stands as a symbol of cultural resilience and artistic excellence. Through the hands of artisans like Li Jianxin, the story of Harbin's horn carving continues to be told—one intricate carving at a time.
The fabric is light and thin, the drape feeling is good, the modeling line is smooth, and the clothing contour is naturally stretched. We often use straight-line shape in clothing design of this kind of clothes, which reflects the graceful curve of human body and the flowing sense of fabric lines.
