A set of magnetic underwear priced at 780 yuan, claimed to treat breast hyperplasia and kidney deficiency—would you believe it?
On October 17, Miss Liu called the reporter to complain. She said she was lured by a beauty salon into buying two expensive "magnetic underwears" that supposedly could cure her condition. Now, she's too scared to even wear them. The reporter decided to investigate further.
**1. Public: Impulse Buying Two Sets of Underwear**
Miss Liu is a member of the Beauty & Beauty Club near Guangsha Village, South College of Changsha. Not long ago, the club invited experts for free breast examinations. Thinking she needed help, Miss Liu rushed over. After the exam, the expert told her, “You have severe lobular hyperplasia. If not treated, it might develop into breast cancer.â€
Then, the beauticians introduced her to two types of magnetic underwear, claiming they could treat breast hyperplasia and reshape the body. Under pressure from the so-called experts and the beauticians' alarming statements, Miss Liu bought both sets at 780 yuan each.
After returning home, she felt uneasy and searched online about "magnetic underwear." She found many complaints and noticed that the product descriptions were vague. “Most people aren’t sure if these underwears are just labeled as health products,†she said. The salon couldn’t provide any official proof that the underwear had medical benefits.
She now believes she was tricked and is afraid the magnetic underwear might be harmful. So, she hasn’t worn them yet.
**2. Expert: No Medical Effect, Some People Should Be Cautious**
Are magnetic underwears really effective? The reporter consulted Shen Yiwen, the Secretary-General of the Changsha Beauty Salon Industry Association.
"Not really," he said immediately. "These underwears are just regular clothing. They’re not medical devices and rarely have real therapeutic effects."
According to reports, the actual effectiveness of magnetic underwears doesn’t match their exaggerated advertising. There are no national standards or test results for such products, especially those with magnetic components.
"In some cases, they can even be harmful," said Luo Quan, a doctor at a hospital in Changsha. "The magnetic strength of most products isn’t sufficient to do anything useful. Worse, strong magnets can be dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, and people with pacemakers. It can even cause serious harm."
**3. Consumer Association: Don’t Be Misled by False Ads**
"The lack of authoritative evidence supporting medical claims makes this a case of false advertising," said Li Jingliang, the Secretary-General of the Hunan Provincial Consumer Council. He advised consumers to file complaints through the 12315 hotline.
However, handling such high-priced items is challenging. When the reporter called 12315, the staff admitted that there’s usually no documentation for out-of-range products.
"Consumers should be careful and not fall for misleading ads," Li said. These high-cost items often target elderly women and are marketed with special features. He urged people to buy only what they truly need.
