Fluorescent silk

In 1999, experts from the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan injected a genetically engineered insect virus into the silkworm, resulting in changes in the genes of the silk protein. When the virus infects the larval cells of the silkworm, the virus will be embedded in the DNA of the human silkworm, changing the genes therein, so that when the silkworm is spun, the green fluorescent fibers are spit out.


The Japan Institute of Silkworm and Insect Agricultural Technology will implant green-fluorescent protein genes into the bases of other Lepidoptera insects, and inject these complex genes into silkworm eggs together with a special enzyme gene. When the eggs develop into adults, transgenic silkworms that produce fluorescence can be cultivated. It has been confirmed that fluorescence is produced by the action of recombinant genes and can be stably inherited to the next generation. This technique can be used to produce high-quality silk.
